GAREN AND KATARINA

The noble homes of Demacia sunk deep into the night when Garen's shadow stretched over the great hall of the castle. He appeared like a giant covered in armor; much taller than the royal guards that stood on the entrance of every room. He approached one of them:

- Anything to report? - he asked with a deep voice.

- Nothing to report, sire. - young guardsman replied.

  Garen tap his shouldler.

- Alright, carry on.

He advanced through the hall and climbed down to the lower levels of the castle. One thing immediately drew his attention. There were no guards on their posts. Garen frowned. ''The vault!'' he thought to himself and rushed forward. As he climbed down several levels under the main hall, he realized that each door so far was unlocked. And still no sign of a single guardsman. The path led him to a chamber that stood in front of the royal vault. It was supposed to be full of guards. Now it was empty. The vault door, however, seemed intact.

- It takes more than a mere thief to break through Lux's protective spells. - he whispered with relief.

In that moment, a swift shadow moved across the floor. Garen looked up immediately, only to spot nothing but a lonely chandelier.

- I know you are in here, thief. - he said. - There's nowhere to run now. Step out to the light and I promise a just trial.

To his surprise, a girl walked out the dark of a column. She had a long, red hair with a single strand that disobediently fell over one of her green eyes, decorated with a scar. The sharpness of the look she gave him was to be compared to the sharpness of her blades that she held. For a moment, Garen felt disarmed before her. There was no sign of worry on her face. Quite opposite: she had an expression of a cat, ready to pounce on a canary.

- Alright... - he was caught by his own surprise. - Now, let's lower our weapons, shall we?

Her lips moved to the side, shaping a mischievous smile. She clearly had no intention to obey.

- Look, - he lowered his heavy sword to the floor. - I am unarmed now. Can you do the same?

She laughed. It was a ridicule. In one swift jump, she appeared on top of his shoulder, kicked him in the head, and as his face was about to kiss the floor, she climbed the chandelier, swinging in triumph.

- A kitten with claws. - Garen noticed, entertained. He picked up his sword and got up on his feet. - Lady, we can do this the easy way, or hard way. What will it be?

She bit her lip and flipped one of her blades with a miraculous speed, then launched it towards a drape. The metallic holder rang under the sharp cut and fell off right on Garen's head.

- Ahhhh! - he shouted. - Come on, lady! Really!

She laughed again as he rubbed the painful bump on his head.

- You're enjoying this, aren't you? Alright, we'll do this the hard way then.

Garen took a spear from one of the armored statues, and tossed it in the air, aiming for the chain that held the chandelier. The chain snapped and the chandelier fell on the floor in all its heaviness. The breaking sound echoed for a while. But the girl wasn't among it's pieces.

- How the hell...

He turned around, only to find her blade under his chin.

- You won, kitten. - he admitted. - Finish what you started.

Her smile faded away for a moment. She seemed angered now.

- What are you waiting for, kitten? Go ahead.

His withdrawal annoyed her. It was too easy. Or perhaps there was something more. ''What's that puppy-like gaze doing on such a mountain of a man?''

- Well?

She pressed her lips into a thin line of anger.

- Blood for Noxus! - she shouted.

The blade whistled through the air. Blood fell on the cold floor. The girl then jumped at one of the tall windows and kicked it open. She stood there in a brief moment, looking over her shoulder, then jumped out into the night.

The chamber door opened, disturbing the silence. A skinny girl with blond hair rushed in, illuminating the room with her presence.

- Brother! We heard the noise, what happened, what... Is that blood!?

Garen lowered his hand from the cut on his cheek.

- It's nothing, Luxana. I think I just made an enemy. Or a friend.

I apologize for any wrong spelling and grammar, I'm yet to perfect my English since it is not my native language. I hope you enjoy this short scene :) Credits for the cover image go to its rightful owner.
